The Craft

What Is Fume Work?

Fume work uses tiny amounts of precious metals like silver and gold in the flame. As the metals vaporize, they bond with the glass and create color, depth, and smoke-like movement.

The result is unpredictable in the best way, which means every piece is slightly different.

Silver fume vaporizing into molten borosilicate glass

01

Metal meets flame

A trace of silver or gold is introduced into the torch.

02

The metal vaporizes

It turns to vapor and bonds directly with the hot glass surface.

03

Color appears

Depth, iridescence and smoke-like movement build in layers.

04

Nothing repeats

The reaction can't be controlled exactly, so no two pieces match.
