What actually happens when silver and gold hit 2,000 degrees, and why the color can never be repeated exactly.
Fume work sounds like folklore until you see it happen.
A piece starts as clear borosilicate glass. Then flame enters the conversation. Tiny amounts of precious metal — usually silver, gold, or both — are introduced into the heat. The metal vaporizes, moves through the flame, and settles onto hot glass in a thin, unpredictable layer. From there, the artist traps it, stretches it, backs it with color, or lets it bloom inside the form.
That is the short version. The real version is part chemistry, part timing, part controlled chaos.
Why borosilicate
Flameworking is the process of shaping rods and tubes of glass in a focused flame. Borosilicate glass is especially loved by flame workers because it can handle heat and thermal stress better than many softer glasses. That does not make it easy. It just means the material gives the artist enough room to work before it demands respect.
Where the piece gets its ghost
Silver can pull cooler, stormier tones: blues, greens, smoke, shadow. Gold can bring warmth: pink, amber, honey, deep sunset, and soft violet. But the final color depends on the flame chemistry, the heat, the thickness of the glass, the clear casing, the background color, and how the piece is shaped after the metal lands.
You can repeat the recipe. You cannot repeat the moment.
Color that is built in, not painted on
