Why Handmade Should Look Alive
Perfect symmetry is a machine's signature. Here's the case for keeping the fingerprints in the work.
Perfect symmetry is impressive. It is also, sometimes, dead on arrival.
A machine can repeat a shape with brutal accuracy. Same curve. Same wall thickness. Same color placement. Same dead little clone, again and again. There is a place for that. There is also a reason handmade work keeps pulling people back in.
Handmade glass should look alive. Not sloppy. Not unfinished. Not careless. Alive.
The negotiation with heat
In flame-worked borosilicate glass, the artist is in constant negotiation with heat. Glass does not move until it is ready. Then, suddenly, it moves a lot. The line between control and collapse is thin. A curve, a swirl, a color shift, a little asymmetry in the way a fume pattern settles — those are not flaws by default. Often, they are the receipt. They prove the piece passed through actual hands.
That is especially true with fume work. Silver and gold do not behave like flat paint. They respond to flame chemistry, timing, oxygen, heat, and the way the glass is shaped after the metal is introduced. One pendant may pull storm-blue and green. Another, made with the same intention, may lean amber, smoke, and violet. The variation is not a problem. It is the point.
You are buying evidence
When you buy handmade glass, you are not buying factory obedience. You are buying an object with evidence in it.
Evidence of heat. Evidence of timing. Evidence of a person making decisions in real time. Evidence that the piece was not stamped out in a batch of ten thousand and shipped into the world with no pulse.
That does not mean standards disappear. Good handmade work still needs balance, durability, proportion, annealing, polish, and intention. The difference is that the artist is not trying to erase every sign of the hand. The artist is deciding which signs belong.
